Viseu received the “testimony passage” in the organization of EUROPEADE

The Mayor of Viseu, Almeida Henriques, received on July 30, 2017, in Turku, Finland, the flag of EUROPEADE, the European festival of folklore, which translates the “testimony passage” of the host mission and organization of the festival in 2018.

EUROPEADE Viseu will thus take place between 25 and 29 July, with the opening ceremony scheduled for 26 July at the Municipal Stadium of Fontelo. The European Forum should be held at the Aquilino Ribeiro Park and the General Assembly of the International Committee at the “Solar do Vinho do Dão”.

For the mayor, Almeida Henriques, “this festival is a great European showcase of the diversity and cultural richness of folklore traditions, but it is more than that. It is also a giant opportunity for the qualification of our folklore and the internationalization of the city-region of Viseu “.

The EUROPEADE festival is the most important European manifestation of popular traditional culture. The main objective of this independent European organization based in Belgium is the safeguarding and promotion of the identity and the European intangible cultural heritage, in an intergenerational logic.

The historical and patrimonial dimension of the city, accessibility to Viseu, installed hotel capacity and experience in the organization of large events were the main arguments for the unanimous approval of the candidacy in 2015.

EUROPEADE’s first festival was held in Antwerp in 1964. In 2017, the organization was handed over to the Finnish city of Turku.

The International Committee shall be composed of representatives of Belgium, Germany, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Italy, Portugal, Romania, United Kingdom, the Czech Republic and Switzerland.
